What Are Narrative Genres?

We speak of the narrative when we refer directly to narrating as a central fact. To tell means to recount or recount events that make up a story. The narrative genre is one of the most prominent genres of literature, whose texts can be exposed through orality or writing. However, each tells facts or stories that may or may not be fiction.

It is a genre that presents different characters described physically and emotionally in the texts. However, their contribution in the course of the story proposes a point of view or perspective from their emotions, actions and thoughts.

Types Of Narrative Subgenres

Story

The story is characterized by its short length, representing a historical, real or fictional event around the level. The concept, which arises in the Latin word relātus, also allows reference to stories and narratives that are not too long.

It follows the narrative structure of beginning, middle and end. However, in its oral narration, the scheme can be modified so as not to do it strictly.

Myth

It is one of the narrative genres that emerge as a way to explain several of the mysterious phenomena of the universe to people. Myths reflect the worldview of a figure in which the beliefs that constitute it can be identified. The legend explains the world’s origin, the gods’ rise and their relationships with the earth and humanity.

Fable

It is a narrative genre in which importance is given to fictional content that provides learning related to morality. It is a countenance that arises from oral literature and is characterized by the kind of characters it uses since, in many cases, these correspond to animals with human characteristics.

The fable tells stories that result from the imagination and allows the knowledge of the traditions of a people. Also, it has a pedagogical aspect for which it is mainly focused on boys and girls.

Narrative Genres – Legend

It is a form of narration that arises mainly from oral tradition. It is through which facts about human or supernatural beings are told. Due to this aspect, it narrates a real or fictional story that includes a series of beautiful elements that are transformed into the reflection of the folklore of the area from which it comes. In this sense, it is defined as a narrative of a widespread nature that is transmitted orally and in writing.

Story

The story is one of the most relevant and transmitted narrative genres that narrates a fact capable of generating a type of emotion in the reader. It can tell imaginary or actual events, and its plot is simple for the reader. Also, it has different formats according to its theme and extension.

Novel

It is a literary text written in prose and can narrate actual and fictional events. It is characterized because it has a more complex plot than the story and is much more extensive. Its action is almost always related to the temporal extension, where the events that happen are subject to how they are prolonged in the story’s time. The writer can approach his work according to his intentions.
